Harnessing Palm Kernel Shell (PKS) for Sustainable Graphene and Graphite

Sustainability24 December 2025

Palm kernel shell (PKS) is a major by-product of the palm oil industry, often used as low-value fuel or treated as agricultural waste. However, PKS contains a high percentage of carbon — making it a promising raw material for producing advanced carbon materials such as graphene and graphite. Utilizing PKS for this purpose not only adds value to biomass waste but also supports more sustainable material production.

Why PKS?

Malaysia's palm oil industry generates over 4 million tonnes of palm kernel shell annually. PKS is particularly suitable for graphene production because it contains typically around 50–60% carbon, making it an excellent precursor for carbon-based nanomaterials. Utilizing PKS not only reduces agricultural waste but also provides a low-cost and sustainable alternative to conventional graphite sources, supporting circular economy principles.

The Conversion Process

  1. Pre-treatment — PKS is cleaned, dried, and crushed into a suitable particle size.
  2. Carbonization — Heated at 400–800°C in a limited-oxygen environment to produce biochar.
  3. Activation — Chemical agents such as KOH enhance the porous carbon structure.
  4. Graphitization & Exfoliation — High-temperature treatment (>1000°C) transforms the carbon into graphene sheets.
  5. Purification — The final graphene is collected as powder or dispersion.

Applications

PKS-derived graphene and graphite can be applied across multiple sectors:

Sustainability Impact

Converting palm kernel shell into graphene and graphite offers a sustainable approach to utilizing agricultural waste while producing high-value materials for modern technologies. This strategy supports waste reduction, resource efficiency, and the development of greener industrial processes. Malaysia's position as the world's second-largest palm oil producer gives it a significant competitive advantage in biomass-derived graphene production.

Ecographe — Born from PKS: Ecographe is Malaysia's pioneer producer of PKS graphene and biomass-derived rGO. We convert palm kernel shell agricultural waste into high-purity graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide, verified by Raman spectroscopy. Our materials are available for research and industrial applications worldwide. Request a sample today.
